So you’ve been noticing some things. Maybe your child isn’t hitting milestones on schedule. Maybe their pediatrician mentioned physical therapy. Maybe you’ve been reading about developmental delays and thinking, okay — maybe it’s time to call someone.

And then the hesitation sets in: What would that even look like? Will my child be scared? Is it going to feel like a test they could fail?

We hear this all the time — and we want to walk you through exactly what to expect at a pediatric physical therapy evaluation at Move U. The short version: it’s nothing like what you’re probably picturing.

Before You Even Come In

It starts with a free 20-minute parent consultation — a no-pressure phone or in-person conversation where you can tell us what you’re seeing, ask questions, and figure out together whether an evaluation makes sense.

There are no wrong answers. There’s no referral required for physical therapy. You just reach out, and we take it from there.

The Day of the Evaluation

When you arrive at Move U, the first thing you’ll notice is that it doesn’t feel like a doctor’s office. It’s warm, colorful, and designed with kids in mind — because kids do their best when they feel comfortable and safe.

Your child won’t sit on an exam table while someone pokes and prods them. Instead, our pediatric physical therapist will:

  • Spend time getting to know your child and letting them get comfortable
  • Observe how they move naturally — during play, on the floor, during transitions
  • Gently guide them through activities that reveal how their body is working
  • Ask you questions about what you’ve been noticing at home

The whole thing is designed to feel like play — because that’s how kids open up, and it’s how we get the most accurate read on where they are.

What We’re Looking For

During the evaluation, your therapist is assessing things like:

  • Muscle strength and tone
  • Balance and coordination
  • Range of motion and flexibility
  • How your child transitions between positions (sitting to standing, floor to upright)
  • Movement patterns and any compensations your child has developed
  • Developmental milestones relative to their age

It’s a comprehensive look — not just at one milestone, but at the full picture of how your child’s body is moving and developing.

After the Evaluation

Once we’ve had a chance to observe and assess, we sit down with you and share what we found — in plain language, without jargon.

If your child would benefit from physical therapy, we’ll explain why, what the goals would be, and what a treatment plan might look like. If everything looks on track, we’ll tell you that too — and give you tools to support their development at home.

Either way, you leave knowing more than when you walked in.

You’re Part of the Team

At Move U, therapy isn’t something that happens to your child while you wait in the lobby. We include parents in what we’re doing and why — because you’re with your child every day, and you’re the most powerful part of their progress.

We’ll give you simple, realistic strategies to carry the work into daily life. Because the goal isn’t just what happens in the clinic — it’s how your child moves and grows in the real world.

Ready to Take the First Step?

If you’ve been wondering whether a PT evaluation is right for your child, that wondering is reason enough to reach out. You don’t need a diagnosis, a referral, or certainty. You just need a question — and we’ll go from there.
